What type of undergraduate degree do I need?

Although most applicants generally come from STEM fields such as environmental science, environmental economics, and sustainability, the Master of Climate Solutions application is open to all that meet eligibility requirements.

Many of the required courses call for strong quantitative foundations and an interest in data-driven problem solving. Applicants that are stronger in other areas can still be successful in admissions as long as they are ready and willing to learn the necessary quantitative skills during the summer before the academic year.

I was not a STEM major and didn’t take many quantitative courses. Is that an issue?

The MCS is designed to provide a rigorous learning experience. To excel in your climate solutions career within the MCS program, a strong foundation in quantitative skills is essential.

While your college transcript may not necessarily reflect a significant number of quantitative courses, this won’t hinder your chances of being accepted into the program. As part of the admission requirements, you will have the opportunity to showcase your quantitative aptitude through a Quantitative Resume.

I don’t know if I have what it takes to keep up with the coursework in terms of quantitative skills or sufficient background knowledge. Is there anything I can do to prepare myself?

In the spring before the program, admitted students will be supplied with: 1. Knowledge List, a list of skills and topics that you need to know before classes begin; 2. Self Assessment, an optional exam covering these topics to assess any areas of deficiency; and 3. Resources, a curated set of resources that you can use to work on areas where you are concerned about. These resources are designed to support you to close the gaps on your own.

In addition to the resources above, there is an optional “bootcamp” which takes place in August before the fall semester instruction begins. This bootcamp consists of prepared presentations and office hours for students to ask questions addressing their particular needs and concerns.
